What Is Stress Management.......


Stress management is a phrase that is often used in order for an individual to manage their stress.
When you are stressed about something, it’s not the issue itself that’s bothering you or causing the stress. It’s the emotional importance you assign to the issue. You feel stressed because of the way your mind and emotions have interpreted the facts and assigned it personal meaning; in other words, your perception of the event.
Most traditional approaches to stress management don’t have lasting results because they don’t stop the mental and emotional loops.
If you’re like most people, you’ve heard and read a lot about stress. If that doesn’t make you an expert, what probably does is the fact that you’re experiencing more than ever before, and that if you looked up “stress” in the dictionary, you’d probably see your picture next to it.
Stress is a term used to describe the wear and tear the body experiences in reaction to everyday challenges, tensions and pressures. The American Institute of Stress claims that up to 90% of all health problems are related to stress. Too much stress wears down the immune system, increasing the risk of everything from colds to cancer. Chronic stress can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and sleep disorders.
The fact is you can’t eliminate stress from your life. The good news is you can learn how to manage and reverse the damage it can cause.

Joan Woodgate, 78, lives in Flixton and is a full time carer for her husband, Tom, 83, who had a stroke 16 years ago. The stroke left him paralysed down his righthand side, and he has been immobile ever since. Three years ago, after Tom was diagnosed with vascular dementia, Joan’s GP put her in touch with Trafford Carers’ Centre to help her cope with the demands of being a carer.

“I had been caring for Tom ever since his debilitating stroke, but when he was diagnosed with dementia, my GP suggested I get more help. A member of staff from the carers’ centre got in touch with me and arranged for a case worker to come and visit me. “The case worker told me what the centre does and went through some of the support services that are available.

Through the centre, I’ve had counselling sessions, and I’ve also been on stress management courses. “When the Government introduced more funding for carers a few years ago, case worker Huma Aziz was assigned to me to help decide if there was any other support that might be beneficial for me. As part of this, Huma arranged for me to see life coach Irwin Edgehill, and the sessions with Irwin have really helped me to put things into perspective. “I have care support workers coming into our home four times a day to shower and dress Tom in the morning. Lunchtime and teatime they come to toilet him and put him to bed
each night. This can be very intrusive and Irwin’s coaching gave me confidence to speak up if I wasn’t happy about anything, whichmade me feel more in control. “Even though I only had four sessions with Irwin, his advice has stayed with me, and even
now I often find myself thinking ‘how would Irwin suggest I handle this situation?’ He gave me a more positive outlook, which has really helped me cope.
