Handling traumatic events can often cause a plethora of different emotions

Depression
Anxiety
Anger
However stress becomes distress or traumatic stress when:
It lasts to long
Occurs to often
Is too severe
Like most problems or negative events that occur in people’s lives the best solution is always to endeavor to talk to family and friends, or to seek a good therapist or coach, preferably a recommended one as this will help the healing process.
Some think that by being stoic about the event and soldering on is a way of getting through it. This concept only prolongs the trauma, due to it not being dealt with head on. Also the negative stress of the trauma could effect in the short term how you respond to work colleague’s friends and family, this is a natural reaction and should not be viewed as a permanent one.
Tips to help you cope and feel better
1, Avoid changing your routine this only compounds the stress, as this new routine will only make you think more of the trauma.
2, Avoid overindulging with alcohol, this will only numb the pain on a short term basis, you’ll be better off in the long run to nurture resilience, and deal with the trauma head on.
3, Exercise is a positive way to cope, nothing to strenuous, getting the blood pumping and circulating, with a jog or a brisk walk a couple of times a week will give you more energy to get through the week.
4, Eat healthily, in times of stress people tend to comfort eat with the incorrect foods, try and keep sugary snacks and takeaways to a minimum, with fresh fruit and vegetables, along with fish or lean meat to be more of the norm.
5, Avoid watching or listening to things of a doom and gloom nature, be informed but not inundated with this kind of news especially just before bedtime. Watch or listen to something light hearted instead.
6, Avoid bottling up your feelings, you might feel friends and family maybe getting a bit bored listening to you and giving you the emotional support needed, remember friends and family are with you in times of trauma and stress as well as the good times so talk with them as much as you feel the need to.
7, it is vitally important that the above learning’s are adhered to aid rapid recovery, to enable your stress levels to be kept to healthy minimum. Stress can seriously harm the entire body system.
