Guide to making realistic goals

Setting well defined goals

The key to setting well defined goals is that the goals set must be grand, clear, positive, and stated in the present tense.

The problem most people have with this is that they articulate and visualize their goals in very negative terms. In other words, they focus their attention on the things they don’t want as oppose to the things they do want:

Don’t want to be broke

Don’t want to be ill

Don’t want to lose my job

Don’t want another relationship that will hurt me

Don’t want bad paying customers

Don’t want my business to fail

Don’t want to fail my exams

Starting your goals with this reverse thinking will sure lead to failure, what your are doing is giving your reticular activating system (subconscious mind) the wrong information. Your conscious brain, this is the part of you that reasons and thinks, puts things in logical linear sequences because it can’t focus on more than one or two things at a time.

However, the non conscious side of the brain the part that stores every bit of the things you have done or experienced throughout your entire life can focus on a million things at once, hence the reason why we can readily recall things we experienced years ago as though it happened yesterday.

Your reticular activating system cannot differentiate between what is true and untrue, so the grander the goals the better. An example of how your RAS works is; when a person goes to purchase a car, or for that matter thinks of a car they want to have, they go for a test drive, then very shortly after they will start to see more of that same car on a daily basis, why? The same car that they are seeing more of has always been there, it’s just that the subconscious mind is now programmed to look for this car because that is what we are focusing our attention on, as stated earlier this works exactly the same way when we think, visualize, and focus our minds on the things we don’t want.

Your goal should be read first thing in the morning and last thing at night and a copy should be placed at the side of your bed for you to see when you wake, a copy in your office draw for you to read during your day, and on your fridge. This at first blush may seem hokey, but done in a spirit of faith will work.
